Recycling with Wine Design

Grupo Hera, a Spanish waste management and consulting firm commissioned a sustainably designed cava gift box from Ciclus with the theme of turning waste into resources. This wine bottle package turns into a lamp with the small addition of a light bulb. I’m not sure that including the electrical components for the light with the package is the most sustainable way of doing this transformation, but it’s certainly an easy and convenient way to get into recycling. And that’s a significantly underestimated aspect of “green” marketing and design.

nice idea if you were to do this as a fun bit of DIY, but surely creating an electrical device out of an otherwise entirely recyclable package defeats the purpose of the exercise? it will use more energy to transport, not to mention the electricity to run it. Think they could have used their money more wisely – but that wouldn’t generate any income i guess. I’d say this was more of a marketing gimmick than a genuinely necessary product… cynical i know. promotion of recycling is an important thing, but does this not send out a mixed message?
