MUST SEE - Repo Man

 repo man

Rubbish weather = film weather, and seeing as the rain is forcing us to stay in, what better way of spending an evening than a decent film!

So, i’ll start the ball rolling, and i’ve started a new category called ‘must see’, so we can all share film tips.

I’ll commence with the classic ‘Repo man‘ which stars Emilio Estevez & his on-screen mentor Harry Dean Stanton as a young Los Angeles Punk who becomes a Repo man (debt collector) but becomes entangled in a riduculous alien-invasion type plot. Classic 80’s counterculture punk-rock sci-fi alien invasion type weirdness. Highly recommended!

Made in Queens

Slow posting this one!
My good friend Amar pointed ‘Made in Queens’ out to me yonks ago and it looks most excellent! The picture above says it all really - NY kids strapping speakers to BMXs - ingenious.

Stanley Kubrick’s Boxes

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Jon Ronson spent 5 years going to Stanley Kubrick’s home to read the content of the boxes the film-maker left throughout the buildings there. Ronson admits that he was looking for Kubrick’s ‘Rosebud’ in the boxes that contain correspondence, photo research, his films’ ads, his daughter’s on-set films and more - and he points to a few lines in an acceptance speech where he thinks he has found it.

Ronson asks: is it possible to get to understand such a man – and his extraordinary working methods – by looking through the hundreds of boxes he left behind?

I met the Walrus

I met the walrus
Don’t know about the rest of you but, when I was 14, I was trying to perfect a 180 heel-flip whilst slowly beginning to realise that there was this whole bunch of people that I had not really noticed before but, who were now omnipotent and strangely appealing…yep: - girls. What I was NOT doing was sneaking into John Lennon’s hotel room to meet my hero and get his view on a few things.

This is an amazing illustrated video of that interview that Jerry Levitan has been sitting on for the best part of 40 years!! The film’s pen illustration is by James Braithwaite .

Radiohead, House Of Cards

In Radiohead’s new video for “House of Cards”, no cameras or lights were used. Instead, 3D plotting technologies collected information about the shapes and relative distances of objects. The video was created entirely with visualizations of that data.

Malcolm McLaren Puts Porn Back in Times Square

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Malcolm McLaren teams up with Creative Time to showcase art and pornography where it belongs - in the heart of NYC, in Times Square. McLaren’s video art showpiece, Shallow, is airing from June 25 to mid-August on 44 ½, MTV’s giant outdoor, gilded HD screen between 44th and 45th Streets.

“I’ve cut up pieces of old stag movies, slowed them way down, and set them to music,” says McLaren. “What you see is not people having sex but people about to have it. The old movies had a lot more foreplay. I was interested in the body language of nonactors, how they communicated their longing.”

The 21 “artful” films are interactive too by calling a specific number to hear the musical mashups commissioned for the pieces. “Love Will Tear Us Apart” meets “Love Will Keep Us Together”. Show schedules and MP3s are here.

Laboratory101 has a great list of some of the most famous steadicam shots in film history. Goodfellas, Casino, The Shining, Touch of Evil, Kill Bill, Boogie Nights, The Player, Strange Days, Tom Yung Goong, and Russian Ark are all compiled onto one great page. We’ve added a few more to THESCRAPBOOK.

Interestingly (ish) Lil Wayne’s pre-video for his single “A Milli” uses the same technique.
